Sr. Monica was born and raised in Vietnam as the tenth of twelve children. From a young age, she was deeply involved in the Church, serving in the choir, participating in the Eucharistic Youth Movement, and volunteering as a catechist. As a teenager, a catechist told her that religious life would allow her to pray more for her family. Those words sparked a desire that would eventually lead her to religious life.
At 18, Sr. Monica began discerning with the Lovers of the Cross Sisters. Shortly afterward, her family immigrated to the United States, and she continued discerning her vocation here. Eight months after arriving, she entered the Vietnamese Dominican Sisters in Houston, Texas.
When she received the Dominican habit, she took the name Sr. Monica Vianney, OP. “Monica” reflects her original desire to pray for her family, while “Vianney,” after St. John Vianney, reflects her growing desire to pray for the salvation of souls.
