The MinistryA ministry at the foot of the altar
Youth Altar Servers assist the Presider and Deacon at weekend Masses, Holy Days, School Masses, Stations of the Cross, or Benediction. The Altar Servers lead the procession at Mass, hold the Roman Missal for the Presider, and provide assistance in preparing the Altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Servers also provide prayer responses and guidance for the congregation.
Why We Form ServersWhat this formation is intended to do
The formation process and service at Mass and other liturgical functions is intended to shape each server in three ways:
Assist the server in drawing closer to Christ by offering their own prayer and praise through serving the Mass.
Acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation of the ceremonies of the Mass and their meaning.
Cultivate a spirit of reverence and right praise, both for the server's own sake and for the edification of others participating in the Liturgy, through discipline and knowledge.
Who Can JoinAll Catholic youth in third grade and up who have received First Communion are welcome to join this important and rewarding ministry.
We hope to have 3 Altar Servers for every Feast or Solemnity (Sunday Mass).
Getting StartedTraining, step by step:
Submit your application
Training for new Altar Servers is ongoing and begins with submitting the application and references.
Serve alongside a mentor
You will be mentored by older, more experienced servers as you progress in wisdom and knowledge of the Celebration of the Mass.
Keep the commitment
Punctuality and faithfulness to the monthly schedule and commitments are required, as outlined in the Altar Server Resource and Responsibility Manual.
Before You ServeWhat's expected of every server:
Schedule
Faithfulness to the monthly schedule, with punctual arrival before each liturgy.
Formation
Ongoing mentorship and training in the ceremonies and meaning of the Mass.
Eligibility
Third grade or older, having received First Communion, and a parishioner of the church.
Safe Environment
Compliance with the Diocese of Fort Worth Safe Environment Program is required of all volunteers.
